Goodbye to “U”

Well, my baby-making days are almost officially over. I have cervical cancer, and next month I’m having the whole business removed.

What’s really funny is my friends and family are completely freaked out. I am just excited to be getting a hysterectomy. I have been done with the kid having for a long time, and I just don’t need it anymore. And no, I have no plans or aspirations to meet prince charming and make him babies. If prince charming were to exist, and be interested in me, we would have happy fun grown up time instead of rolling the genetic dice.

There was a rep in my office today to see another one of my co-workers. He was admiring my collection of various what-not on the shelf behind my desk which includes (but is not limited to) a dragon, a knitted swine flu virus, a pair of tiny knitted socks, a wand, and a picture of the TARDIS. The conversation went like this:

HIM: So, is all this your stuff?

ME: Yeah, I’m a bit of a geek.

HIM: Does your husband like this stuff too? (Referring I guess to the dragon, wand, etc.)

ME: Don’t have one of those.

HIM: Guess you don’t get many dates then.

ME: Excuse me?

At that point me coworker entered and I was rescued from conversation.

I really don’t know what to make of it, just made me feel kind of offended, but at the same time, I don’t really date. It’s just not super high on my list of priorities. But why should I not like the things I enjoy? And why do I let morons get under my skin like that?

Finished “Day at the Beach” socks. So at least I’ve gotten something accomplished this week. And it’s only Thursday.

I must admit that I am totally in love with Flat Feet sock yarn.

Now on to making more hats.

Welcome Home

Here we are, in my home town, Myrtle Beach. This is the first time (in their memory) that the kids have been to any beach, and the first time they have seen the Atlantic. It’s still a little chilly, but we made it here in time to enjoy some time hunting shells and playing in the surf.

Tomorrow we are going to spend all day at the pool, and I hope to get started on some socks with the Flat Feet sock yarn I won in the swap at Christmas. Tonks is going to have to wait until my Day at the Beach socks are done.

It’s so good to be home, to hear the sound of the waves crashing on the shore, to smell that mixture of salt air, chlorine, and suntan lotion. It’s been almost 20 years since I’ve been here, and so much has changed that I hardly recognize the place. But the feeling is still there, that I am home.

I said I wouldn’t be making any more hats any time soon, but last night during Lost I made another one. I’m working on a knitted version of a Heartless hat from Kingdom Hearts at the suggestion of Middle Child. Also working on a mini version that may require the use of French knots for the eyes, still unsure. It will likely take several tries to get it right, so I am apparently doomed to continue knitting hats for awhile longer. Thanks the yarn gods that I have plenty of the necessary yarn left over from the Olympics.

And speaking of the Olympics…

Four more days, and four more hats done. They are The Curling Hat, The Red Had, The Minty Hat, and The Ice Hat. So I have made a total of 10 hats. Hooray!

On the Rocks

Tonight’s hat was titled by my middle child as “Snow on the Rocks.” We sat around and watched Harry Potter tonight so missed the men’s figure skating, which probably would have produced a much more flamboyant color selection.

Tonight’s hat is dedicated to our own US Olympic team. Sorry I didn’t see any of the events that were aired tonight, but Lost was on. And it was REALLY good.

Oh, Canada

I have dubbed tonight’s hat “Oh,Canada” in honor of the host country of the Winter Olympic Games. And also it’s red and white just like Canada’s flag. AND Canada earned their first gold medal in an Olympics held in their country. So it definitely deserves a hat. So now that’s 4 hats done and a whole bunch left to go.

Also, my regular knitting group was cancelled tonight due to snow. School is cancelled tomorrow due to snow. ”Wow! There must be several feet of snow in Alabama,” you say. Nope. Maybe an inch. Maybe. One of the joys of living in the South is not being able to cope with frozen precipitation.
